Running Water Series

is a series of five kilometer road races designed to raise awareness lack of access to clean, safe drinking water and adequate sanitation experienced around the world.  The five kilometer distance is symbolic of the five kilometers that women and children walk on average in Burkina Faso to obtain five gallons of water.

The inaugural event was held on October 2, 2011 in Bangor, Maine to benefit the BARKA Foundation.  Nearly 100 individuals braved the forecasted rainy weather to race for the cause.  Since this inaugural event, the series has grown to become a network 5k road races, all working to allow us to continue our endeavors with events having been held in Maine, Massachusetts, and California.
